AIDS and Polio Awareness Campaign

In India Uttar Pradesh and Bihar are the two top most polio affected states. It was realised that eradicating polio is not only a matter of vaccination but also an issue which requires change in the behaviour of the community to succeed. Accordingly the Social Mobilisation Network (SMNet), a UNICEF initiated polio programme was established in Uttar Pradesh in 2001.

It works through a team of community level mobilisers and coordinators at sub-district, district and regional level. The main task of the SMNet is to ensure that all children in the areas of the deployed community mobilisers are vaccinated against polio in every round. Sharnam Sewa Samiti in its own small but significant way is contributing to the larger forces at work in putting a check on the growing spread of polio virus in the state.

The organisation has been working on the project in the rural pockets of Nindura block of Barabanki district, and urban areas of Lucknow city.
